The closet question is two lookups, and most people only make one

It comes up on every form of this examination because every dwelling has closets and the rule is dimensional, which makes it easy to write an item around.

Where the two halves live

The dimension is in Article 100 and the clearance is in NEC 410.16. You need both, and turning to one of them and answering from memory on the other is the single most common way this item is lost.

Article 100 defines the closet storage space, and the definition has measurements in it. The volume is built from the side and back walls, the floor, the highest clothes-hanging rod and the width of the shelf, and it steps partway up: deeper in the hanging zone below, shallower in the shelf zone above. Read it in your own book and sketch it, because a sketch settles in fifteen seconds what a paragraph argues about for a minute.

NEC 410.16 then sets how far a luminaire keeps from that volume. The distance changes with the kind of luminaire, one kind is allowed inside the volume, and two kinds are not allowed in the closet on any terms.

Why the definition sits in Article 100 now

The 2023 edition gathered every article-level definition into Article 100 and the 2026 edition kept them there. Before that, a definition used at .2 of an article lived in that article, and this one lived with the luminaires.

The practical consequence is small and expensive. Study material written a couple of cycles ago tells you to find the storage space definition in Article 410, and you will not find it there. A candidate who trusts that spends a minute reading an article that no longer contains the sentence.

It also means the definition is now one lookup rather than a hunt. Article 100 is alphabetical, so if you can spell the term you can find it, which is the strongest argument for tabbing Article 100 first and everything else second.

What the clearance keys on

Two properties of the luminaire decide the number, and neither of them is the wattage. The first is how it is mounted, surface or recessed. The second is what the light source is, either an incandescent or LED source that is completely enclosed, or a fluorescent one. NEC 410.16(C) pairs those up and gives a clearance for each pairing.

The pattern underneath the pairings is worth carrying in your head, because it is simpler than four separate entries make it look. Exactly one combination gets the large clearance, the surface-mounted incandescent or LED with a completely enclosed source. The other three permitted combinations share a smaller one. If you remember which single case is the expensive one, you can reconstruct the rest at the page.

Then there is the case that is not a clearance at all. A surface-mounted fluorescent or LED luminaire identified as suitable for installation within the closet storage space is permitted inside the storage space, under NEC 410.16(C). Somebody drilled on a pair of distances walks straight past that option and marks it wrong for being too good to be true. It is in the book.

And two kinds do not get a distance because they do not get in. Under NEC 410.16(B) an incandescent luminaire with an open or partially enclosed lamp stays out of a clothes closet, and so does any pendant luminaire or lampholder. An open lamp is not handled with a bigger clearance. It is handled by keeping it out.

So the chain of reasoning runs in one direction. Establish the storage space, establish how the luminaire is mounted and what its light source is, check that it is not one of the excluded kinds, then read the clearance that pairs with it.

Running it the other way, starting from the fitting you would actually use on the job, is how a correct-looking answer arrives. The item is usually built so that the fitting a working electrician would reach for is one of the wrong options.

Answering one under the clock

  1. Read the stem and decide whether the space described is a clothes closet. If the item calls it a closet and puts a shelf and a rod in it, it is.
  2. Turn to Article 100, read the storage space definition, and draw the volume in the margin with the rod, the shelf and the step in the depth marked.
  3. Pull two facts out of the stem about the luminaire. How it is mounted, and what the light source is.
  4. Check NEC 410.16(B) first. An open or partially enclosed incandescent lamp, or a pendant, ends the item there and the answer is the option that says it does not belong in the closet.
  5. Otherwise read NEC 410.16(C) for the pairing you have. Before you measure anything, check whether the stem says the luminaire is identified for installation within the storage space, because that one goes inside and no clearance is measured.

Five steps, two lookups, and both lookups are in articles you have tabbed anyway. On a portion that gives you a shade over two minutes an item, that is comfortable.

The rest of Article 410 is worth a tab too

Closets are the reliable item, but the article they come from carries several others that turn up on the equipment area of the outline.

All four reward the same habit. Find the dimension or the definition first, then read the rule that uses it.

Why this one keeps appearing

Item writers like rules that can be described in a sentence and checked with a ruler. A closet has a shelf, a rod and a ceiling, and a proposed fitting either clears the defined volume or it does not.

That makes it possible to write four options that are all plausible to somebody working from experience and only one of which survives a look at the book. It also makes it possible to write the same item again next year with a different fitting in it.

Which is the argument for spending twenty minutes on this rather than five. It is not a big rule and it is not a hard one, and it comes back.
