The most-changed section in the code, plus a Texas-only exception

Why this section specifically
Article 210 has expanded its ground-fault requirements in almost every recent edition. Locations get added. Exceptions get removed. Thresholds move.
That makes it unusually good exam material, because it separates people who read the current code from people who learned it once.
It also makes it dangerous to study from old material. A confidently remembered list of GFCI locations from two cycles back will be wrong in several places, and the wrong places will not announce themselves.
Read the opening sentence before the list
Every subsection of 210.8 opens with a sentence describing which circuits and which devices it reaches, and only then gives its locations. The opening sentence is what most items are actually testing.
The ratings in those opening sentences are not the same from one subsection to the next, and the differences are the whole game.
- Dwelling units, 210.8(A). Receptacles rated 125 volt through 250 volt, on single-phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to ground. No ampere ceiling at all.
- Other than dwelling units, 210.8(B). The same voltage range, plus 50 amperes or less on single-phase and 100 amperes or less on three-phase.
- Specific appliances, 210.8(D). Branch circuits at 150 volts or less to ground, 60 amperes or less single-phase and 100 amperes or less three-phase.
- Outdoor outlets at dwellings, 210.8(F). Single-phase, 150 volts or less to ground, 60 amperes or less.
A commercial item that hands you a 60 ampere receptacle is testing whether you know 210.8(B) stops at 50. A dwelling item that hands you a heavy receptacle is testing whether you noticed 210.8(A) has no ceiling at all, so the ampere rating is not the fact that decides it there. The location and the voltage are.
210.8(A) carries exceptions of its own, and the opening sentence of 210.8(F) points at one of them by number. Read them where they sit rather than assuming a subsection is only its list.
The device itself is required to be installed in a readily accessible location (NEC 210.8). That single sentence answers more items than it has any right to.
Receptacle or outlet, and why the word decides the answer
The dwelling and non-dwelling subsections are written about receptacles. 210.8(F) is written about outlets.
An outlet is a point where current is taken to supply utilization equipment, whether or not anything plugs in. So a hardwired condensing unit outside a house has an outdoor outlet and no receptacle, which is exactly how 210.8(F) reaches equipment that 210.8(A) does not.
The opening sentence of 210.8(F) begins with the words "For dwellings", so that subsection does not reach commercial work at all. Non-dwelling outdoor and rooftop work is answered from 210.8(B), which is written about receptacles and carries a rooftop entry of its own.
When an item describes hardwired equipment and you are hunting through the receptacle lists, you are in the wrong subsection.
What changed in the 2026 edition
Two changes are worth carrying into the exam room.
First, the ampere ceiling in 210.8(F) went up. The previous edition stopped at 50 amperes and the 2026 edition reaches 60. NFPA panel 2 recorded the reason in one line, that the branch circuit rating was increased because solutions are readily available and the hazard is the same. The practical effect is that a range of dwelling outdoor equipment that used to sit above the ceiling now sits under it.
Second, 210.8(F) gained a list of locations underneath its opening sentence, where it previously ran as a single sentence. Read the list rather than assuming the subsection is a one-liner.
Neither change is the sort a summary written for the previous edition will catch, and the material in circulation right now is mostly written for the previous edition.
The Texas amendment nobody outside Texas will tell you about
Under 210.8(F), Exception No. 2 excuses listed heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment from ground-fault protection, and in the national text that exception carries an expiration date printed inside it. Texas adopted the exception and left the expiration sentence out (16 TAC 73.100(b)).
So the national sunset does not land here. The exception continues in Texas after the date on which it lapses elsewhere.
That matters twice. On the exam, because a Texas exam is referenced to the code Texas adopted. On the job, because a nationally written course will tell you the exception has gone and in Texas it has not.
Exception No. 1 under the same subsection is a separate thing and gets confused with it. It excuses lighting outlets, other than those covered in 210.8(C). Read both in your own book, because an item can offer you the wrong exception as a plausible answer.
Arc-fault is a different section with a different first question
Arc-fault protection lives at 210.12, and the 2026 edition put a new subdivision in front of it. 210.12(A) Means of Protection holds the six ways the protection may be provided, which used to sit at the bottom of the dwelling-unit subdivision.
The dwelling-unit requirement itself reaches 120-volt, nominal, single-phase branch circuits at 15 and 20 amperes, and at the 10-ampere rating as well, where they supply outlets or devices in the rooms and areas the subdivision lists (NEC 210.12).
Read that sentence in the order it is written. The circuit rating comes first and the room comes second, and both have to be true. A 240-volt circuit is out. A 30 ampere circuit is out. A bedroom outlet on a 20 ampere, 120-volt circuit is in.
That is the real difference from 210.8. A ground-fault item is usually settled by the location and the receptacle rating. An arc-fault item is settled by the circuit rating first, and candidates who go straight to the room list get the ones with an unusual circuit wrong.
The 2026 edition also moved the letters here. Because Means of Protection took (A), the occupancy subdivisions sit one letter later than they did. Find them by title in your own book rather than by a letter you remember.
Replacing a receptacle pulls both rules forward
Swap a receptacle in a location that requires ground-fault protection under the current code and the replacement gets that protection, even though the original never had it (NEC 406.4(D)).
The arc-fault rule works the same way one subpart later. Replace a receptacle on a branch circuit that requires arc-fault protection and the replacement is protected, by a listed outlet branch-circuit type device or from upstream (NEC 406.4(D)).
This is the section that surprises people in the field and it makes a clean item, because the intuition is that replacing like for like is always compliant. Where an equipment grounding conductor is absent, the same subsection sets out what may be installed instead, and that is a separate item worth reading.
What an item is really testing
- A room name plus an occupancy type: which subsection of 210.8 you are in, and dwelling or not dwelling is the first fork.
- An ampere rating on the receptacle or the circuit: whether you know the ceiling for that subsection, or that 210.8(A) has none.
- Hardwired equipment rather than a receptacle: 210.8(F) if it is a dwelling and outdoors, 210.8(B) if it is not.
- A branch circuit described by voltage and ampere rating: 210.12, and check the rating before you look at the room.
- An existing installation and the word replaced: 406.4(D).
- A date, an edition, or the word amended: whether you know the state adopted version differs from the model code.
The last one is the Texas-specific opportunity and the reason to read the state rule rather than a national summary.
